Harriet Mae Hooper Obituary

Harriet Mae Hooper went home to meet her Saviour on February 23, 2026 with her children by her side. She was 92 years old.

Harriet was born September 13, 1933, right in the middle of the Great Depression, to Deemer and Blanche Fryberger of Shamokin, PA. She joined her two older brothers, Sammy and Robert. Later, another brother, Dennis, joined the family. Harriet was the only girl in a gaggle of boys but she kept up with them just as well as any brother could.

After Harriet was born the family moved to Boring, Oregon, then to Silverton and finally settled in Washington on Mt. Pleasant outside of Washougal. She lived there until she married the love of her life, Arthur Hooper, on October 7th, 1955. They moved into their first and only house on 26th Street in Vancouver where she lived until her passing. They were blessed with three children Colynn in 1956, Arthur in 1959 and Dee Mara in 1960.

She attended church at Salmon Falls in Washougal for years, where she was baptized in the Washougal River. Harriet loved the Lord and after the addition of 3 children, she decided to move her church home to Calvary Tabernacle (now New Life Christian Center) in Vancouver. You could find her there every Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night. She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, stood by the penny bucket, and every year was part of the Christmas play. In present times, she still loved to stand by the penny bucket, sometimes even challenging the Pastor to a foot race if they raised a certain amount of money.

She was Colynn’s Campfire Leader from second grade through graduation and the Council Fire. They always had something going on, camping, making crafts, earning their beads and badges, having parties, and singing for rest homes or for the PTA.

She worked for the Vancouver School District as an aid to help with testing and then to teach the children to read. She loved working with the children and to this day, if one of her former students would see her, they would say “Hello Mrs. Hooper.”

Harriet was an avid reader, one of her favorite things to do. She would read two books, sometimes three in a week. She would see a review of a book, then order it from the library and always carried a book with her wherever she went.

The other favorite thing was jigsaw puzzles. She and friend Jane spent many an afternoon putting a jigsaw puzzle together. When it was finished they’d take a picture, put it back in the box and start another one. Though the ones she especially loved were framed and hung on the wall.

She really enjoyed traveling. She and husband Art traveled to Death Valley and Reno, she took a cruise to Alaska with her cousin Kay, she travelled to Houston for Art and Darcy’s ordination and then to Oklahoma to see her granddaughter Angela and husband Jake. Every November she would fly with Colynn to Arizona to spend Thanksgiving with granddaughter Sara, Storm and Ashton.

Some of her other excursions included a hot air balloon ride, going to the Booth Brothers concerts (her favorite gospel group), meeting up with her cousins, and taking short road trips with cousin Janet, friend Jane and her children to the beach, Timberline, Mount St Helens, Parkview, Hood River, etc.

Harriet is survived by daughter Colynn Wright Nelson, son Arthur Hooper (Darcy), grandchildren Deema Funderburg (Jeff), Derrick Long (Jackie), Jay Long, Sara Storm (Elwood), Jacob Hooper (Dea Dea), Angela Bulsiewicy (Jacob), Rachael Miller, Dennis Hooper (Rayni), great grandchildren Damein, Rhinnon, Duncan and Dylan (Derrick), Ashton and Tristen (Sara), Dorian and Darius (Jacob), Ulyssa and Dennis (Rachael) and Kenna, Ari and Eden (Dennis) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents Deemer and Blanche Fryberger, brothers Sammy Fryberger, Robert Fryberger and Dennis Fryberger, husband Arthur Hooper, daughter Dee Mara Gonser, mother-in-law Myrtle Wegner, great grandson Dashric, nieces Debbie Fryberger, Terry Lee Fryberger and Laura Fryberger, and nephews Stanley Fryberger, Jimmy Fryberger, David Fryberger, and Scott Haack.
