Joan Carol Shelton peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2011 at the Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver. Born on August 24, 1939 in Camas, Washington to William and Violet (McLean) Canfield; Joan was 71 years old. A lifetime Camas resident, Joan graduated from Camas High School in 1956 and then enlisted in the United States Navy in 1957. She later became a Deputy Sheriff for Clark County and was a member of the Good Samaritan's Trailer Club and former Treasurer for the Washington State Good Samaritan Association. She enjoyed bingo and playing cards with friends, travelling, writing novels, crocheting afghans for the Ronald McDonald House, and spending winters down in Yuma, Arizona. Joan is survived by her son Richard Downey of Springfield, Massachusetts; daughters Lisa Brown of Vermont and Sheri Downy-Wing of Camas; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. There will be a celebration of Joan's life with full military honors on Saturday, August 20th at 1:00 pm at Brown's Funeral Home: 410 NE Garfield St. Camas, WA 98607. Memorials in Joan's honor may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the Ray Hickey Hospice House. Brown's Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Camas has been entrusted with arrangements.
