Obituary of Robert Chambers

Bob was born in Boswell Oklahoma to Robert and Eunice Chambers. His family relocated to Oregon when he was 10 years old. His father passed away when Bob was eleven. Through determination and hard work his mother kept the family together. Bob learned his determination and love of family and the will to succeed from his Mother during these hard times. Their family moved to the Vancouver area when Bob was sixteen. From an early age Bob worked in construction, building the "Heights Houses" for the wartime shipyard workers. Bob quit school and joined the Marine Corps at the age of seventeen. He served proudly for the duration of WWII. Upon return from his service to his country Bob courted and won the hand of, Martha, his wife of sixty-three years. Bob and Martha spent the first summer and early months of pregnancy, with their only son Russell, as fire spotters at a remote lookout station in what is now known as The Goat Rocks Wilderness area north of Packwood. Bob began working in the Crown Zellerbach Camas paper mill in 1951. During his employment at the paper mill Bob rose through the maintenance department ranks as a pipe fitter, maintenance planner, pipe shop supervisor and sheet metal/welding shop supervisor. Bob was respected and admired by all. Bob retired from the paper mill in 1986. Bob loved his family and his activities. He was an avid hunter with rifle, muzzle loader and archery. He fished for anything that swam or crawled in the water. Bob taught fire arm safety to young people for ten years. He used his many skills to build four homes for his family. Bob and Martha's son, Russell and his wife Susan live in Washougal and have enjoyed a family relationship throughout the years. One of the greatest joys of Bob's life were his grandsons, Russell and Robert. Bob and Martha also opened their home to multiple foster sons and daughters for nine years and forged some lifelong relationships with their foster children. Bob and Martha's activites included square dancing with several groups. They loved to travel and visited many exciting places including Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Bora Bora and Fiji. They also took trips through the Panama Canal and RV'ing in Mexico, and Alaska. Bob is survived by the love of his life, Martha, his son Russell and his wife Susan, grandsons Russell and his wife Stephanie, and Robert and his wife Jaime, great granddaughter, Kellsye, and great grandson Rylin, sisters AnnaJo Webb and Alma Hayes and foster sons Eldon Leigh, Steve Buskirk and wife Shannon and Daryl Smith and wife Edith. Memorial Service will be held at Brown's Funeral home in Camas on Saturday March 5th at 11:00 AM. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
