Obituary of Joyce Cox

Joyce Darlene Cox peacefully passed away with her family at her side on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at her home in Washougal. Born on August 26, 1934 in Campbell, Minnesota to Marvin and Laura (Witt) Fett; Joyce was 77 years old. A graduate with honors from Campbell High School in Minnesota, Joyce went to college at Sioux Falls College in South Dakota where she received her Bachelor's of Arts Degree. She then taught for seven years in Oregon before moving to Washougal, Washington. A fifty year Washougal resident; Joyce worked as a teacher at Jemtegaard Middle School in Washougal. She also coached girls volleyball at Jemtegaard and girls basketball and track for Washougal High School. Joyce took a very instrumental part in making Title IX a law in Washington State. This law made it required in Washington to offer equal opportunities for female athletes to participate in as many sports options as male athletes. She was also a member of the WEA and the NEA Association and retired from teaching and coaching after 31 years. Outside of school and sports, Joyce enjoyed cooking, hunting, and fishing. Most importantly, Joyce enjoyed being around her family and close friends. Joyce is survived by her loving husband of 36 YEARS James David Cox at home; sons David L. Cox of Stevenson, Washington and Douglas D. Cox of Washougal; daughter Jodi Hatfield of Portland, Oregon; twin brothers James Fett of Lacey, Washington and Lloyd Fett of Lansing, Michigan; eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. There will be a celebration of Joyce's life on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 10:00 at the Joe Brown Memorial Gym located at Washougal High School. Private inurnment will be held at the Washougal Memorial Cemetery in Washougal. Memorials may be made in Joyce's name for Education and Athletics at Riverview Bank. Brown's Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Camas has been entrusted with arrangements.
