Obituary of Doris Jane Brooking

Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Doris Jane Brooking, known as Dory, died at her Camas/Vancouver home on Saturday, August 26, 2017 surrounded by her seven surviving children.

Dory was born in Portland, OR on June 1, 1923 to Frank and Doris Reed.  She and her brother, Herb, grew up in Portland.  Dory graduated from Grant High School and earned a Bachelors in Home Economics from Oregon State College.  As a young woman she climbed Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens.

In 1944 Dory married Dr. Emil (Brook) Brooking before he went overseas as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

After the war, Dory and Brook settled in Camas where Brook practiced family medicine. Together they raised eight children, hosted Palestinian exchange student and "adopted" son, Mohammad Shihadah, sailed to the South Pacific, and road tripped to Alaska and twice across the United States.

Dory's focus was always on her family.  She also was passionate about preserving the home she and Brook made on the Columbia River as wildlife habitat.  She loved growing native plants, hiking in the Columbia Gorge and the Grand Canyon, skiing, photography, and dancing. She had a song for every situation.  Dory also enjoyed sharing her knowledge of Columbia River history.

Dory was preceded in death by her husband Brook, daughter Connie Durkee (Steve), brother Herb Reed, and son-in-law Steve Kikuchi.  She is survived by her children, Barbie, Lindy, Cathy (Pete Sallee), Andy (Betty), Peggy, John (Cheryl), and Ann and her grandchildren Paul and Joel Kikuchi, Adam and Cooper Engst, Kadin and Karis Brooking, Eli and Allison Brooking, Gabe and Amelia Stark, Forest Sallee, Brent Latham, Sarah Haran and Jesse Durkee, nine great grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews.
