Obituary of Edward Malcolm McAninch

Dr. Edward “Ed” McAninch

November 9, 1925 – December 27, 2018

Longtime pillar of the Camas-Washougal community, Dr. Edward “Ed” McAninch passed away peacefully on December 27, 2018, joining his late wife of 66 years, Edwyna “Eddie” McAninch.  Ed was born in Pittsburgh, PA, to Malcolm G. and Sarah E. (Drum) McAninch. He was raised in Mount Lebanon, PA.

Ed and Eddie met singing in the church choir while in high school.  Ed attended Carnegie Tech briefly, but was called to service with the Army in WWII, where he served in the infantry in France.  He was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart.  Following a prolonged recovery, he set his sights on a career in medicine.  He enrolled at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where it happened that Eddie was also enrolled; their relationship blossomed there.  They married in 1950.  Following graduation from Denison, Ed attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, graduating as an MD in 1952.

In search of adventure and a change from the East Coast, they moved to Seattle, WA, where Ed completed his internship.  Following internship, they settled in Camas, WA, in 1953, where Ed practiced medicine actively until 1991.  He was appointed a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice in their first cohort in 1969, helping shape family practice medicine as it is today.

Perhaps what most people know about Ed was that he was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, who could frequently be found hiking with the Osprey’s. He spent a substantial amount of time with Boy Scout Troop 312, and remained deeply involved with the Mazamas climbing club. Ed and Eddie traveled the world extensively, with Ed’s adventures taking him to all 7 continents over the course of his lifetime. He was a staunch defender of the environment, and was known to participate actively in political demonstrations.  For many years he was actively involved with St John’s Presbyterian Church.

Ed was grateful and humbled to be honored as Camas Washougal Citizen of the Year in 2010.

He is survived by three children: Malcolm, MD (Janeen) of Portland, OR, Wendy, M.Div of Ashland, OR, and Gregg, MD (Carrie) of Reno, NV; he has 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Edwyna “Eddie”, and a daughter, Julie, who died in infancy.

In keeping with his love of the outdoors in general, and the Pacific Northwest in particular, a celebration of life will be held at a time and outdoor location to be determined in the Spring of 2019.
