Obituary of William Jurgens
Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
William Stanton Jurgens (Bill) passed away surrounded by his family on November, 6th 2007. He was born on November 28, 1927 in Everett, WA, the youngest of five children born to Carl and Beulah Jurgens.
Bill's love for athletics began in high school. He lettered in four sports. He left high school to join the Merchant Marines. He returned to Everett, WA to finish his education, graduating with a basketball scholarship to Seattle Pacific University. He enlisted in the Army for the Korean War. While serving, he was a member of the Army track team, competing in Europe, setting national records in shot-put and the hammer throw, narrowly missing the Olympic team. After completing his term in the Army, he returned to Central Washington University where he excelled in basketball, football and track. Upon graduation, he married Camilla Boyd, and moved to Washougal to accept a teaching position. There he designed and built the family home with his own hands. He continued his education during the summers earning his Masters Degree. He remained in the Washougal School District for 34 years in the capacities of teacher, vice-principal, and 13 years as principal of the Washougal High School. He also served as a coach and then Athletic Director. He participated as a member of the Lower Columbia middle-school activity association. Early on he was active in St. Anne's Episcopal Church (Washougal) - as a Lay Reader. He was also a member of the Lions Club.
Bill adopted four children at birth; Jane, Victor, Alexander, and Alison. In February, 1977, he married Margie Warner and her three children Mark, Koby, and Layle. Bill and Marge celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this year. Marge was truly his life-partner and soul-mate.
After retirement, Bill joined Feather and Quill where he enjoyed carving birds and wild fowl, with occasional awards for his efforts. Other hobbies included photography, growing roses, accumulating technical gadgets, and boating. He and Marge also enjoyed traveling with the 49er's to various campground locations.
He died like he lived, peacefully and with dignity. His family was with him during the entire time of his venture. While his absence leaves great holes in our lives, his life gifts help fill the void.
One of Bill's many qualities was his love for his family. A large family which contains threads of adopted and step children were only seen one way by him, as a whole. He truly loved all of his children so we only feel it fitting to list all of them by name. Children: Mark and Marilyn Warner, Jane and James Atti, Koby and Steve Johnson, Layle and Dan Pavlina, Victor and Joy Jurgens, Alexander and Darlene Jurgens, and Alison Meyer. Grand Children: Rebekah (31), Jonathan (27), Kyle (27), Christopher (23), Nathan (23), Cole (20), Adam (20), Loren (19), Bryan (18), Emily(18), Mathew (16), Avery (16), Camilla (13), Karissa (11), Joshua (8), Gloriana (7), Dominic (5), Nickiana (4), and Maxwell (deceased). Great grand children: Olivia Rachelle, and Ethan.
A Gathering of friends and family is planned in his memory and will be held on November 17th from 1:00-3:00 at the Harvest Community Church (2436 NW Astor St, Camas, WA 98607).
An annual scholarship foundation has been established in his name.
