God bless you brother.... It's been a month since your passing and I'm still finding the words to describe your importance to me. 51 years of togetherness and memories don't begin to share my love for you. I miss you in my life. I know you would want me to keep pushing forward being the best possible person I could be.....to keep the McKowan name and beliefs forefront in our relationships with others. I will see you again, "but not yet" I thought you might like this poem below. It's a poem written from your point of view.
"When I must leave you"
When I must leave you
For a little while-
Please do not grieve
And shed wild tears
And hug your sorrow to you
Through the years,
But start out bravely
With a gallant smile:
And for my sake
And for my name
Live on and do
all things the same,
Feed not you loneliness
On empty days,
But fill each waking hour
in useful ways,
Reach out your hand
in comfort and in cheer
And I in turn with comfort you
And hold you near,
And never, never
Be afraid to die
For I am waiting for you in the sky!

When I was young, I remember Shawn teaching me how to do a somersault. When I finally learned how to do a somersault, he then taught me how to dive off the diving board. I was so scared, but he was very patient and reassuring with me. I finally was able to dive. He showed me the importance of confronting my fears and overcoming them. Thank you Shawn!
I also remember the time when Shawn, Aiden and Barbara came down to join us at Disneyland. We all had a wonderful time. After the trip, Shawn kept bringing up to me how memorable the trip was for him and the family. I remember Shawn giving me these words of wisdom that I wrote down as a weekly reminder that I still look at on my cell phone: "Work on generosity and forgiveness and work hard to become a better man. Be a good steward under God. Humbleness is the key to life. Work hard to speak and listen to people at the same level. Do one good deed for someone each day with no expectation of any reward back. Appreciate the little things in life because people forget."
Thank you Shawn. I am going to miss you cuz.
