I met Carl and Gail through my husband, Richard Hamby. I learned of the history of the English Estate, that beautiful oasis that was here long before any other homes or businesses in that area. I feel privileged to call Carl my friend, and am grateful for the time Richard and I had not long ago with just Carl and Gail. His fearlessness and passion for trying new ideas and living an authentic life inspired us all. He was a true teacher. We will miss him.

Although it was not totally unexpected, due to Carl’s health problems, it came as a real jolt to see the notice in the paper. I have known Carl for a long time, first as his customer, then as his employee, but for the last 30 years I have been proud to call him my friend. With the opening of his winery, I again became his customer. Carl was a true out-of-the-box thinker, his mind never confined by what is, but always thinking about what could be. I will always be a slightly different person for having known him and I treasure the memories of time spent with him, most of all our most recent visits. The void I feel can be nothing compared to what Gail, Jenny and Charlie are feeling. I hope your memories will comfort you.
