Obituary of George Heller

George Frederick Heller peacefully passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver. Born on July 9, 1924 in Akron, Ohio to Russell and Edith (Lampe) Heller; George was 86 years old. An Orchards resident since 1990; George was formerly from Portland, Oregon and Akron, Ohio. Growing up, George was a three-time High School Varsity Letterman, and after high school he enrolled in the United States Army. He was a Veteran of World War II proudly serving in the United States Army's 10th Mountain Ski Troops Division. This was the only Ski Troop Division in World War II and George was the last known surviving member. He met the love of his life and married Verna "Juanita" Bland in 1947. He worked as a Transmission Technician for AT &T before retiring. Throughout his life George enjoyed baseball including watching, playing in an over 60 league, and managing Little League. He was also an avid golfer becoming the first Sr. golfer of Club Green Meadows to win a championship. Outside of sports, George enjoyed square dancing with Juanita and spending time being around his family and friends. George is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 63 years Juanita at home; sons Gary (Soni) Heller of Estacada, Oregon, and Tom (Nita) Heller of Vancouver; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Susan Heller (1958); and brothers Russell Heller Jr. and Don Lee Heller. There will be a graveside service with full military honors on Tuesday, December 7th at 2:00 pm at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Memorials in George's honor may be sent to the American Heart Association. Brown's Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Camas has been entrusted with arrangements.
