Of the many sweet memories of my mother, and as the day we lay her to rest nears, I find one particularly comforting memory keeps coming to the forefront of my mind. It centers around the prayer, "Our Father." This was the first prayer my mother taught myself, my sister, and my brother. I remember kneeling on the hardwood floor, leaning onto a small bed in the room I shared with my sister in our childhood home. I can still close my eyes and remember the shine of the hardwood floor. I can smell the sweet scent of lemon lingering in the air like it was yesterday. I can see my mothers face so radiant, and so very happy. My sister was right by my side while we said this precious prayer, our arms touching, and hands diligently folded. Many times my brother would also join us during this special time with my mother, and.... of course us kids would always begin giggling. We were so young then, without a care in the world. It felt so safe and warm in that room with my mothers kind presence. It seemed as if life would be that way forever. My mother faithfully made sure we had said the “Our Father,” every single night, then she’d gently kiss us, and sometimes whisper a sweet sentiment into my ear. My father would come in afterwards. He’d tightly tuck my sister and I into our covers like only a father can. He’d smile and kiss us both goodnight. The love my sister, brother, and I felt, and all the wonderful memories my mother made for us, I will hold dear in my heart for eternity.
