I was a football coach in Clark County for 20 years, and as with all coaches and officials, Wayne and I had our on-the-field disagreements from time to time. That goes with the territory. It is like cats and dogs. But there was never any question of Wayne's integrity, not only in officiating the games, but in his handling of the enormous additional duties of assigning officials. His contributions to Clark County sports were enormous, and we are all better for them.

I will miss Wayne. He was a wonderful and happy man. It made him happy to help others and he knew how his support could give someone a boost. He had great connections and opened a lot of doors for me when I moved to Vancouver. That's the kind of guy he was, anything to help someone out. Wayne would introduce me to one of his friends, or I would meet one of them somewhere and instantly they became my friend solely because I was his nephew. It was like a light clicked on in their mind and their facial expression changed. They would go from who the heck is this guy? to, oh you're related to Wayne Kackman, well then you must be ok. Come to think of it this started long before I moved to Vancouver from eastern Washington. Whenever I was passing through Portland I could plan on being welcomed wholeheartedly by Wayne and his friends for Sunday morning brunch at the Quay. I didn't even have to call just show up at 11:00am and they would be there. Herb and his wife, Rod and Linda, sometimes Dennis and Kendall, cousin John and others who I can't remember (sometimes we needed a big table and sometimes a smaller one) all loved to join in for a great breakfast and a discussion of the events present and more importantly the past. I knew he was loved by many. Umpires I never knew would ask me when I came up to bat, "How's Wayne doing, I haven't seen him in a while?" After updating the umpire, I can remeber shaking my head (when I should have been thinking about getting a hit) and thinking, how many people does my uncle know? I already miss the trips to Seattle to see Mariner games with him. It was difficult for me to get out of bed the next morning and go to work after the long drive home from Seattle after a weeknight game, but it was all worth it to enjoy a game with my uncle. It didn't hurt that he had access to two of the best seats in the house either. Bye the way, thanks to the judge for all of those tickets. Wayne and I really appreciated them. I guess there is at least one UW Huskie that is ok. You could never pay for anything with Wayne around, if you could somehow pick up a check ahead of him he wouldn't be very happy about it. If you were his friend or part of his family he was proud of you and supported whatever you were doing at the time. If they measure a man by the size of his heart then Henry Wayne Kackman will have a good view of us all from heaven as he had one of the biggest.

My heart goes out to the family members. I had the honor of accompaning Wayne to many social events and yummy dinners. At first he drove us, then I took over the driving so we could get there in a timely fashion. He spoke often about his kids and his face would light up when he spoke about his grandkids. He told me that he was truly sorry to his ex-wife and his kids for being gone so much when they were growing up. He knew he missed out on a lot of great stuff. One of his best days was going to Seattle for the Hall of Fame award he received. He was lit up that day! I will miss the phone chats with him as well as our outings. A greatly loved man is now in our hearts.

I have some wonderful memories of Wayne from the 70's and 80's when I worked as the athletic director for Camas High School. It was always a real treat to see him on the field or on the court. He always demonstrated a clear sense of fairplay on all occasions whether at an athletic contest or in his dealings with AD's and coaches. But my best memories of Wayne are of his tremendous sense of humor and that huge smile of his. I regret that I was unable to attend his memorial at Prairie Fields today. He leaves a wonderful legacy for all who were associated with him. And also for those who follow him dressed in a striped shirt or who strap on a face guard and chest protector.

Wayne you will be missed! Sorry I am unable to make the Memorial service today at Prairie #1, what a fitting place for Wayne's memorial. I want to express my condolences to all the family & it was especially nice to meet Lari last Tuesday at the hospital. I am grateful to Wayne for "prodding" me to take up umpiring. At age 56 I finally became one of the oldest rookie umpires...thanks to Wayne. I truly enjoy it! Thanks for the "push" Wayne. We will all miss you at the fields. GQQSE

It was a privilege to call Wayne a friend. He would come out to Battle Ground & bring me his cleaning, & we would chat for awhile, then out the door he would go on to another friend to visit. He'd say, "see you in a few weeks". He was never in a hurry. Even when he wasn't feeling well, he never complained. What a beautiful man alot of us were lucky to know.

Wayne was one of a kind, and I'll treasure memories from our few visits together, especially dinner at Sylvia's and shopping for his favorite hot chocolate mix. I wish I could be there with you all for his last baseball game - I'm sure he's thrilled. My heart is with you all. Love and peace, mary

I want to send my deepest condolences to the Kackman Family. I work at Prairie High School as the secretary in the Athletic Office. When Wayne was the assignor for sports, I talked to him quite a bit on the phone about game changes. He always was friendly and we always shared a laugh. After he quit as an assignor, I got to see him when he came to some of Prairies basketball games. Again we always shared a hi and a laugh. I will miss that. Wayne will always be in my thoughts, he was a wonderful man.

I want to offer my condolences to Wayne's family. I knew him through athletics when I was coaching at Hudson's Bay H.S. He was one of the finest and fairest referees I ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was a true gentleman and friend to many, many coaches. He was always in the right position to make the correct call. He was appreciated by all of the coaches who knew him, and often for a crucial game, we would request that he would referee. He was that good. Sincerely, Michael Bruener.

Our sincere sympathy to the Kackman family. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Wayne and the rest of the Kackman brothers were famous around Endicott for the quantity of food they could eat as young men when they were hauling hay!

Uncle Wayne was such a sweet man, a very happy heart. I will never forget how much he enjoyed watching me play basketball and the many trips he made to see me play. He always assured me that the referees would be good as long as he was present!! My prayers are with you, my cousins and the people Uncle Wayne made smile each day.
